Air conditioning in the Hunter Valley

From our workshop in Mayfield we run air conditioning work up the Hunter Valley most weeks: installs, servicing and breakdown repairs in Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton and the towns in between. The further up the valley the job is, the more we plan the day around it, and pricing a new system costs you nothing either way.

23Working in Hunter Region

Drive an hour up the valley from Newcastle and summer afternoons are several degrees hotter and winter nights several colder, so a system that does fine on the coast can struggle in the Hunter at both ends of the year.

The Hunter River rises in the Barrington Tops, flows south and then east, and reaches the sea at Newcastle. The Hunter Region counted 682,465 people at the 2021 census, and about 55% of them live in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. The Lower Hunter takes in Maitland and Cessnock, with Pokolbin at the centre of the wine country. Further up, coal mining is the valley's biggest industry, most of it for export through the Port of Newcastle, and the country around Scone, 153 km north-west of Newcastle, is one of the largest thoroughbred breeding areas in the world. The weather changes as you go inland. Scone Airport's Bureau station averages 31.9°C on January afternoons and 3.4°C on July nights over 1990 to 2026, against 25.6°C and 8.5°C for the same months at Nobbys, on Newcastle's coast. Our regular Hunter runs reach Maitland, the Cessnock district and Singleton, and each one is booked so a technician isn't making the drive for a single job.

Maitland, the closest of the Hunter runs

Maitland is the nearest Hunter city to our workshop and the one we visit most. The jobs run from heritage houses in Central Maitland, with high ceilings and solid walls, to new estates where the family is buying its first system. Summers there are noticeably hotter than in Newcastle, so we size every unit on site.

Cessnock and the vineyards

Cessnock and Kurri Kurri bring a different mix: small cottages where one reverse cycle split does most of the work, plus cellar doors, tasting rooms and cool rooms around Pokolbin. Commercial jobs out there are booked around trading, especially near harvest and on busy weekends.

Singleton and the Upper Hunter

Singleton is our longest regular drive, and it gets its own set days. Winter matters as much as summer up the valley, where July nights average only a few degrees above freezing, so we check a unit's heating output in cold weather before recommending it. Further north toward Muswellbrook and Scone, ring us first and we'll tell you what we can do.

How a Hunter day is planned

We plan a day in the valley around the route. Quote visits, services and installs in the same area go onto the same day, so the driving is shared and none of it lands on one customer. The van leaves Mayfield stocked for that route, with the common parts for the brands we expect to see. A breakdown doesn't wait for a set day: ring us, and you'll hear when the first technician can get to you before anything is booked.

23Questions

Questions about air conditioning in Hunter Region

Does an install in the Hunter Valley take longer because of the drive?

Not much. A single split is usually fitted and running in one day, with an early start from Mayfield. A ducted system takes two to three days on site wherever the house is, and we come back each morning until it's commissioned. The drive is planned around the job, so you don't pay for it.

Can a Newcastle-sized system cool a Hunter Valley house?

Not always. Most sizing rules of thumb are written for milder weather, and a Hunter afternoon is several degrees hotter than the coast, so the same room needs more capacity. We work the size out room by room on the quote visit, looking at the windows, the insulation and which way the house faces.

Do you need to visit the house before quoting a Hunter Valley install?

For a new install, yes. A price without seeing the house is a guess, and a wrong guess an hour from our workshop costs everyone a second trip. For a like-for-like replacement, photos of the old unit, its label and where it sits can get you a rough price first.

What if the repair needs a part you don't have in the van?

On a long run we carry the common parts: capacitors, fan motors, sensors and drain fittings. If your unit needs something we don't carry, we order it the same day, tell you when it will arrive, and book the return visit onto our next day in your area. If the unit can run safely in the meantime, we leave it going.

We bought a Hunter Valley house with air con already in. Will you service a system someone else installed?

Yes. Plenty of the systems we look after in the valley were put in by someone else, often years before the current owners moved in. On the first visit we clean it, check the refrigerant side and the drain, and tell you its age and condition, so you know whether to plan for a replacement.

Is the call-out fee different in the Hunter Valley?

No. A breakdown in Maitland, Cessnock or Singleton has the same call-out fee as one in Mayfield, and it covers getting to you and the first half hour of finding the fault. We tell you the amount on the phone before anyone is booked. Install quotes are free across the valley.
